From where did "Delete Facebook, Hit the Gym, Lawyer Up" originate?

Main Post:

All sources from a cursory Google search indicate it's just reddit parlance, but I haven't been able to find a source comment. I have found instances dating back to almost three years ago, so it's been around for a while. Was this just a general attitude, common advice given in "My wife's about to leave me, what should I do?" r/AskReddit threads? How did this congeal into it's own meme? Was the suggestion really that common?

Top Comment: It's an amalgamation of several pieces of extremely common advice given on reddit that are said together as a way of circlejerking over the fact that every single person would be advised to "delete Facebook" or "hit the gym" no matter what their problem was. It can also be purposely jumbled for comedic effect e.g. "Hit Facebook, Delete Lawyer, Gym Up"

Since "lawyer up" is such common advice here, what are some tips for finding a good one when you need to?

I look for a lawyer that has had previous experience as a DA. Preferably in the jurisdiction your case will be handled in or one that is nearby. It's amazing how much a lawyer with the right connections can get done behind closed doors before a case even goes to trial.

Edit: Also, once you have an attorney-client relationship established if you run into any trouble down the road all you do if give the police your attorney's card and refer any questions to them. This can keep charges even from being pressed. Of course always call your attorney to give them the heads up the police may call.

Lawyer Up thoughts?

Main Post:

I love legal dramas and the Ace Attorney games so I love the theme of this game (and I'm surprised there aren't more legal-themed games). People who have played Lawyer Up - how are you liking it? Are either of the expansions worth getting? How replayable are the cases?

Top Comment: It's a bit of a mess. You draft (discovery) cards for the case. You can attempt to find cards that combo off eachother...but then you shuffle your deck. In each round (call a witness), you draw 5 cards from your hand. If you don't have a good draw, your just screwed. It would be amazing if you could plan your hand for each witness, but I think that would take an incredibly long time. This was my number one most anticipated game recently and it fell flat. 2/5 for me. I have not played either of the expansions*

What should I do to prep myself for a "lawyer up" situation?

Main Post:

I see many post of people in legal trouble. The general response is, reddit isn't a lawyer and a local lawyer would best help you. I saw another redditor post that having a lawyer ready to dial in your phone is a must. I'd like to know what you think is the best way to preemptively ready yourself to lawyer up. Few things come to mind. My family isn't new to lawyers fucking up our case. My dad ended up doing all the foot work for the lawyer and suggestions. Still the lawyer was a fuckup and for some odd reason he was afraid of the lawyer we were against. Still that's another story.

Even though I've dealt with a lawyer or two, it's usually been a split second decision under stress to decide who to call. Few points I wanted to address to the Hivemind in hopes we all can already know what to do when it's time to "lawyer up".

  1. What kind of lawyer and/or lawyers should I have generally on hand?
  2. How do I know the lawyer I pick knows his shit?
  3. How do I know he's charging me a legit rate and not charging me for made up hours?
  4. How much should I set aside to cover lawyer fees if I ever need to lawyer up?

I know some of the answers will be depends on the situation, but we are planning for an unknown. Still I think some level of preparation is better than no preparation.

Some background as to why I'm personally interested but doesn't need to be the focus of the thread:

I'm a new photographer and anticipate friction doing this hobby.

Like any of you I'm a human and most likely break laws more often than I'm aware.

One day I might get married...

I've picked up the love of guns and going to the range for target practice. Might get a concealed one day.

Top Comment: A good lawyer will: Tell you up front his billable hours, usually before you even ask Promptly reply to phone messages and emails (even if it is to say that s/he will need some time to get back to you). Charge you at each 1/10 of an hour (if it is hourly) Explain and make sure you understand the retainer So do what you can to make sure that the lawyer does these things? Ask him questions, ask the state bar association about him. Talk to friends who have needed lawyers. Ask him what the typical lawyer in your area charges for the type of work you need, and then ask other lawyers as well. If the guy your talking to doesn't know the standard going rate then he is not the one you want. Ask why he charges more or less than the going rate. Ask around about your lawyer. The communities tend to be small and most lawyers know who the shitty ones are. What type of lawyer should you have: Everyone should have an estate/tax attorney. Nice thing is, you probably won't need him that much and it will likely be a flat fee. This guy will draw up your will so that there is less estate tax, he'll do your pre-nup and your health care proxy, living will ect. You see him once and maybe update some will and trust stuff if the tax laws change. You want a good one. Be willing to splurge cause these guys usually end up paying for themselves with tax savings. This is the guy you ask to refer you to divorce attorneys. He knows a lot cause they constantly come to him asking about tax consequences of a divorce settlement. He will also refer you to the other attorney you will need: a lawyer specializing in property law. Wanna buy a house? make sure you have a lawyer you trust to do some research, again estate/tax guy probably knows a really good one. Ask around the neighborhood you are moving too. Everyone there used a lawyer and will likely talk about how good or bad they were. Also, since the lawyer has closed a house in the area he already has an idea of what he is working with. You should know of a civil and criminal defense attorney. Hopefully won't need one, but have their business card somewhere. Ask the DA who they think is a reputable attorney. Sounds crazy, but the DA will not likely point you to a shitty attorney. They will likely point you to one who is timely with his replies and meets deadlines. In the end, if your lawyer seems like he will meet deadlines, is prompt with his replies and, above all, can explain what is going on to you in a way that when you leave you don't feel helpless and lost you should do fine. Lawyers cannot guarantee victory, but they can make sure that you are given a voice.

What's this all about?

I believe this is referring to people getting a divorce, often caused by a cheating spouse. This is a common piece of advice that people give to the soon to be divorced person (usually a man).

What is with "Hit the gym, lawyer up, delete facebook"?

Main Post:

I've seen that comment or comment chain quite a bit recently when browsing r/all, especially when wives are involved.

Where did it start?

Top Comment: On r/relationships , it is common and now cliched advice on what to do after a break up/impending divorce. Hit the gym (to feel better), lawyer up (to protect yourself in the divorce), delete Facebook (to avoid seeing what your ex is up to and the temptation to contact them) EDIT: to clarify even further, lawyer up = get a lawyer. You will see the three pieces of advice mixed together as a joke, IE delete gym, Facebook up, hit the lawyer
